Greetings from your favourite outbounder! Here I am in the beautiful city of Doetinchem, where the sun is shinning and the temperature has reached records for september...while I don't know "officially", but it has been really hot lately. I want to update you all back home, at university, on exchange or here in Holland on my dutch adventures!!!
Things are going extremely well here in Holland. I have been at school for two weeks now and have settled into a routine all of my own. Each day is an exciting adventure as I find out more and more about dutch culture and explore the fietspad throughout my city. I absolutely love biking and I have even learned how to bike without any hands!!!
At school I am in VWO 5 nd my classes include mathematics, economics, english, dutch, social science, biology, physics, gym and chemistry. My favourite class is gym or gymnastic in dutch. It is very easy for me to understand what is going on, even though I don't recoginze every word the teacher says...or most words! The school system is VERY different from Canada. The students at school have been nothing but kind and welcoming to me! They seem to love to translate everything for me. They are also very accomidating when I TRY to speak Dutch. Of course, they laugh when I attempt the "g" sound, but I think each day I am getting better and better. I am still amazed how ducth people can switch back and forth between languages like it is nothing at all! If I haven't already mentioned...most people in Holland are able to speak Ducth ( of course!), english, german and french. They tell me it is because no one else is willing to learn dutch! Well I am here, and I am oh so willing to learn Dutch!
On monday... which is just around the corner, I will be off...to where I do not know yet. It could be Paris, it could be Berlin or it could be TEXEL! I thinking it is Texel...so Chesley and Adam you better be ready for me, because I think I am coming your way! Next week is project week at Rietveld Lyceum. A vareity of activities are taking place...first years are off to camp, VWO 6 is off to Texel, HAVO 4 and VWO 4 are off to Paris/Berlin, and VWO 5 will be busy volunteering with organizations in the local community! Well I must end this update session here, but I will be back with more stories to share! Miss you all very much!!!
much love,
DEIRDRE xoxoxo
***INTERESTING SIDE NOTE : By the way, today in english class I learned that all these years I have been pronouncing my name incorrectly! It is offical, the proper pronucation is JEE-ur-druh, while at least that is what my english text book said!
