Rotary Presentatie!!

Hallo Goedemiddag allemaal,

Ik ben nu drie maanden in Nederland. Sinds ben ik aangekomen probeer ik me aan de cultuur aan te passen en de taal te leren. Ik praat al een beetje Nederlands met mijn gastfamilie, mijn vrienden en met winkelassistenten. Ik maak altijd fouten maar elke dag verbetert mijn Nederlands een klein beetje. Ik vind Nederlands spreken moeilijk omdat iedereen Engels kan spreken maar ik probeer het. Ik begrijp het meer dan ik het spreek dus ik weet niet altijd wat ik moet zeggen.

Ik ben druk geweest met school, dansen, handbal en Nederlands leren. Ik blijf tot December bij mijn eerste gastfamilie, daarna ga ik naar mijn tweede gastfamilie. Een keer in de week ga ik naar mijn Nederlandse lerares. Zij is een hele goede docent. Ik vind dat zij me goed met mijn Nederlands helpt. Elke Woensdag middag ga ik naar een kinder crèche. Ik vind dat heel leuk. Ik vind dat het heel goed is voor mijn Nederlands. Ik spreek de hele tijd Nederlands omdat de kinderen geen Engels spreken. Deze Maandag morgen go ik ook naar de crèche omdat Sinterklaas aankomt. Ik heb zin om dat te zien. De kinder crèche is ook goed voor mij om Sinterklaas lichtjes leren. Op school zit ik in 5 VWO. Mijn lessen zijn economie, gymnastiek, ANW, biologie, wiskunde, natuurkunde, scheikunde, maatschappijleer, Engels, en Nederlands. Mijn favoriete lessen zijn gymnastiek, Engels en ook maatschappijleer omdat ik deze lessen het beste kan volgen. Ik vind naar school gaan in een andere taal heel moeilijk. Mijn andere lessen kan ik nog niet volgen.

In Oktober ben ik naar Londen geweest. Ik ben daar geweest met een andere Canadese uitwisselingsstudent. Dit jaar woont zij in Leeuwarden. Voor allebei van ons, het was de eerste keer in Londen. In Londen zijn wij met haar gezin gebleven. Het was een twintig minuten metrotrein naar de centrum stad. Ik had een hele goede tijd in Londen. Wij waren heel druk. Wij hebben geprobeerd om de gehele stad te zien. Wij zijn naar Buckingham Palace geweest. Daar hebben wij “the changing of the guards” ceremonie gezien. Ook zijn wij naar geweest Tate Modern, Tower of Londen, Westminister Abbey, National Gallery, en de Canada huis. Wij hebben de musical “Wicked” gezien. Het was uitstekend! Het is de voorspel van “the Wizard of Oz.” Ik heb mijn tijd in Londen genieten. Het was fijn om weer te kunnen praten met andere en ze te kunnen begrijpen.

Sommige van de verschillen tussen Canada en Nederland waren meteen duidelijk: taal, klimaat, godsdienst, eten en middelbare school. Maar toen ik hier voor langer was, merkte ik minder duidelijk verschillen zoals de relatie tussen studenten en docenten, culturele feestdag, en het gebruik van op 24 urenklokken. Ik geniet van mijn verblijf in Nederland. Ik heb zin in wat er nog komt!

Wow, it is almost time for me to switch host families for the first time...time is literarly flying! This is my last week with Klaas, Japke and Anne. Next Saturday Ditte, Kai and Tjeerd will become my new hostfamily. Today I baked a carrot cake for my hostfamily. I have to say that it tasted really good, but it’s apperance was the prettiest! They thought it was really lekker and I think that I am forgiven for my lack of bakking skills!

Here is a quick recap on the last few weeks: My host sister, Anne and her friend, Emma won the Mossel Muziek Prijs 2006. The music competition was between the 3 locals high schools. I went to see their performance and it was a really great show! They definately deserved first prize. I had dinner with my second hostfamily. It was really nice to meet and get to know them better as I will soon be leaving my home for the last 3 and a half months and living with a completely new family. I have been to a few competitions for my handbal team. The last game the girls won with a ridiculous score of 24-8...or something like that. Tomorrow I am also going to watch the girls play, but this time I get to sit on the bench! Unfortunately I won’t be playing but my coach asked me if I would like to stats. It isn’t as good as playing, but I’ll take it! My hostfamily and I went to Burger’s Zoo in Arnhem. We have visited the Ocean, Desert and Safair exhibition. The coolest part of the day was wachting the Giraffes running! It was a slow motion proces... very funny to watch! I have also been to the Graafschap-FC Zwolle game...and the Graafschap hebben gewonnen (2-0)!!! It was my first professional soccer match...really cool!! I really would like to go to an Ajax game now!

Things are getting better at school. I find that I can understand more and more...well I mean it is much better than in September when I was in a constant state of confussion. I have been meeting with my counsellor for school over the last couple of weeks and we are working on making a few schedule changes. I really cannot understand anything in economics, especially since I have never had the subject in English so I really have no knowledge of the subject at all. Hopefully I will be adding CKV ( art!) and French to my rooster and eliminating economics. Haha...in gym this past week I had an extremely embarrasing exchange student moment. When I say I can understand things...I definately do not mean everything and sometimes instructions in gym class go right over my head! We were playing a game involving teams, a basketball and hoops. I understand the point of the game now...and I think that it is a little bit too confussing to explain through a blog. Basically I didn’t understand the use of the hoops on the ground, so I shot the ball at the basketball net instead. Big mistake! Everyone just laughed, rolled on the ground and laughed! Yeah, real funny!

On Friday I made a presentation for my Rotary Club. It was a 5 minute talk about my experiences in Holland thus far and my trip to London. I made the presentation entirely in Dutch. I am very confident that I made many mistakes in pronouciation, and also I am sure that their were also mistakes in my sentence structure...but it was in DUTCH!! I felt pretty good about speaking in front of my club in Dutch for the first time. Hopefuly their were impressed with my Dutch! Today Sinterklaas arrived in Doetinchem. It was really cool to see!! There were so many little children dressed as Zwarte Piet. I wish we had a celebratiën like this in Canada. For those of you back home, who have no idea what I’m talking about...Sinterklaas is celebrated on the 5th of December. He arrives in a steamboat from Spain and parades around on a white horse. Similar to Santa Clause, he has helpers called “Zwarte Pieten”. Children place their shoes infront of the fireplace, along with a carrot for the horse of Sinterklaas and Sinterklaas in return leaves a gift for the children in their shoes! Another tradition is for families to have a Secret Santa like gift-exchange. For whosesever name you select, you have to purchase a gift and then come up with a creative way of wrapping the gift and write a poem about the person. Hehe..I must get started on this...anyways, after Sinterklaas arrived by boat, he paraded through the city on his white horse and Zwart Pieten handed out papernoten ( yummy dutch Sinterklaas cookies!)
